Coursework
Assignments
There are two major assignments, each of which will earn a total of 6 scores across 4 milestones:
- the static project
- the interactive project
And three additional grades:
- Altair practice
- d3 practice
- class participation
Participation
We will have several in-class discussions, as well as some room for open-ended conversation on Ed.
You must meaningfully participate in at least two of these discussions to earn an S. (Participation in one will earn an N.)
Meaningful participation would include:
- asking thoughtful questions
- providing insight based on your own experiences
- thoughtful commentary or critique on visualizations under discussion
Grading
Grades will be on an S/N/U scale:
Grade | Points | Rationale |
---|---|---|
Satisfactory | 1 | The work meets the necessary criteria with no major omissions. |
Needs Improvement | 0.5 | The work fails to meet one or more major criteria, or a large number of minor criteria. |
Ungradable | 0 | The work does not meet even the minimal criteria to be considered complete (~50% of task). |
As described in more detail on their respective pages, the final submissions of the two projects will earn multiple grades: Visual Design, Narrative, and Code Quality.
Final Grade
There are a total of 15 points available: 6 per project for a total of 12, 2 small assignments, and the participation score.
Grade | Minimum Score |
---|---|
14 | A |
13 | A- |
12 | B+ |
11 | B |
10 | B- |
9 | C+ |
<9 | will be discussed |
Note
I reserve the right to adjust these boundaries for the entire class, but will only do so in everyone's favor.
Late Work
You start the quarter with a 72 hour "lateness" budget. This budget may be used for any assignments, with the exception that peer critique must be turned in on time.
Submitting a peer critique late, or anything over the 72 hour total budget for the quarter, will result in a maximum grade of an "N" for that portion.
The nature of the major project has the concept of resubmission & revision built in. Between that and the lateness budget, there is no room in the schedule for additional resubmissions of work.
